All'ombra della montagna (reg. Alois Johannes Lippl - 1940)

Nell’estate del 1847 lo scrittore inglese Edward Lear compì un lungo viaggio a piedi in Calabria e Basilicata. Il tour ebbe inizio da Reggio. L’8 e il 9 di agosto soggiornò a Polsi e qui ebbe modo di incontrare e conversare con il superiore di allora, Domenico Fera di Platì, già avanti negli anni. Questa la sua narrazione ed la sua picture.

August 8. The noontide hours were employed in sketching in the cloisters, and in

examining the relics and treasures of the church under the auspices of the Padre

Superiore. The subjects which weigh most heavily on his mind are " Quel tunnel," * and

"Quei Preti maritati ! Vescovi sposati ! o cielo ! Una moglie di arcivescovo ; O che

stravaganza ! The afternoon we passed in strolling about the fine scenes around this

hermit-home ; but, though containing endless material for foreground study, its general

picturesque character is limited, and we decide on leaving S. ta Maria di Polsi

tomorrow. We must retrace our steps as far as San Luca, and then make for Gerace,

sleeping either at Bovalino or Ardore, as time may allow.

August 9. The worthy Superior presented us with a medal and a print of the Madonna

di Polsi, the original picture having been discovered by a devout ox, who inveigled one

of the early Norman Conquerors of Sicily all the way from Reggio to this place, for the

particular purpose of inducing him to build a monastery. The excellent ox, said the

monk, led on the prince from hill to hill till he reached the proper spot, when,

kneeling down, he with his pious horns poked up the portrait of the Virgin Mary, which

was miraculously waiting some inches below the ground for its bovine liberator.

Nel precedente post si è accennato ai superiori che Platì offrì a Polsi. L’elenco era incompleto mancando dei nomi di Enrico Macrì (dal 1874 al 1879)e Antonio Macrì (dal 1879 al 1903)ambedue originari della frazione Cirella. Il canonico Francesco Pangallo fu invece vice superiore di Giosofatto Mittiga dal 1927 al 1929 quando fu elevato superiore, titolo che tenne fino  all’1 dicembre 1939 quando sopraggiunse la sua morte. Questi era nato a Plati il 24 dicembre del 1876 da Giuseppe Pangallo e Portulesi Maria. Qui sotto il suo ritratto (per gentile dispensa di Francesco di Raimondo)
